Meliades
The nymphs were daughters of Gaia and Uranus and represented the highest expression of the beauty and power of nature. The Meliades, also known as Maliades, Epimelides, or Vukoles, were a category of forest nymphs or Dryads. These female deities were young and beautiful. As beings, they were placed between gods and mortals; though not immortal, they lived for a long time and fed on ambrosia.
The nymphs were the protectors of apple trees and other fruit-bearing trees, as well as patrons of sheep. Their name is believed to be derived from the word melas, which means “apple” or “sheep.” Others believe their name comes from their preference for living in trees such as the melia or melios, that is, the linden and the ash (fraxos), also known as meliadi and melegos.
